5 Steps for Managing Digital Dilemmas | Betweened #8

February 17, 2024Our weekly(ish) newsletter for caregivers, including resources for parenting with tech and updates on Betweened (iOS and Android), where we’re building family-friendly media.
One Simple Question
I hear from a lot of parents that they struggle to find moments to connect with their kids, be it on Netflix, TikTok, or Betweened. Here’s a simple question to ask next time your child is watching videos.

Steps for Managing Digital Dilemmas
Seventeen years ago, Dr. Marcie and I crossed paths in a statistical regression class at Teachers College, Columbia University. Little did we know, that chance encounter would lead to a collaborative venture that perfectly aligns with our professional passions.
We are proud to introduce "When Tech Goes Sideways: Strategies for Managing Digital Dilemmas," an hour-long session designed for parents navigating the complexities of digital parenting. As the founder of Betweened, a family-friendly entertainment platform, my mission has always been to empower parents in their digital parenting journey. Dr. Marcie, with her commitment to helping families thrive through challenging times, brings invaluable insights to this collaboration.
If you’d like to join a free upcoming session (or receive a recording), please fill out this form and we’ll follow up.
In our session, we will share a practical framework for addressing common digital dilemmas faced by children, including bullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and misinformation. The five core steps are below and here.
Take a Deep Breath: Stay calm and composed when discussing incidents with your child to ensure effective problem-solving.
Gather Information: Engage in a curious and non-judgmental dialogue with your child to understand their experience fully.
Assess Physical and Mental Needs: Prioritize your child's safety and well-being, seeking professional support if needed.
Determine Action Steps: Take appropriate actions based on the situation, such as reporting content or adjusting parental controls.
Create an Ongoing Maintenance/Check-In Plan: Keep communication lines open with your child to prevent future incidents.
Other amusements…
Perhaps continuing the statistical theme, I love a good data visualization. I’ve been nosing around Visual Capitalist and enjoying the presentation of all sorts of information
I’ve also been perusing ParentData, led by economist Emily Oster, which has a wealth of articles on a variety of parenting topics across all stages. Note that there is a paid option for additional content.
The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna (YA Fantasy) is my most recent read. Highly recommend!
