Rediscovering Twilight & Connected Screentime

Simple Questions for Connection

I just started watching the Twilight series with my daughter. She didn’t know anything about it, so it’s been a joy to watch her discover Team Edward vs Team Jacob. And been a source of lots of conversions. Often starting from a simple question.

  • Why do you think Bella is drawn to Edward, even though he's a vampire?

  • How does the movie mix elements of fantasy, like vampires and werewolves, with real-life issues?

  • Is it right for the vampires to keep their existence a secret from humans?

The idea of simple conversations during screentime is a cornerstone of how I turn media into a positive, connected activity. It’s based on the concept of dialogic reading.

You know those silly voices and discussions you have while reading books with kids? That’s dialogic reading, how we transform passive reading into an active experience. Those skills can be applied to other forms of media, fostering connection and critical thinking.

It doesn’t have to be a long, involved process. A simple question or two is all you need. For more on how to turn screentime into active connection, check out this post on dialogic viewing.

Thank you for being an integral part of our community.

Blue skies,
