Can a zombie game make me a better parent? | Betweened #11

March 16, 2024Our weekly(ish) newsletter for caregivers, including resources for parenting with tech and updates on Betweened (iOS and Android), where we’re building family-friendly media.
Can a zombie video game make me a better parent?
Games are very much on my mind as I return to Game Developers Conference this week, which led to one of my favorite topics -- How a zombie apocalpytic shooter can make us better parents and humans.
My take: The key to leveraging technology, including video games, for positive personal growth lies in how we engage in conversations around these experiences. It's not just about consuming content together but about actively discussing and engaging with it—before, during, and after the session. This practice applies to all forms of digital media, from games to streaming services like Netflix and social platforms like TikTok.
When Tech Goes Sideways
Mental health and parenting expert Dr. Marcie and I have been piloting a 60-minute workshop for parents with a pragmatic approach to managing your child's technology and fostering a strong foundation of digital literacy, critical thinking, and connection. The video is now available and we’d love your feedback (or please share with friends). If you’re part of an organization that would like to share a free, live session of the talk, please reach out. We’re happy to coordinate!
In the session, we share a practical framework for addressing common digital dilemmas faced by children, including bullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and misinformation. The five core steps are below and here.
Take a Deep Breath: Stay calm and composed when discussing incidents with your child to ensure effective problem-solving.
Gather Information: Engage in a curious and non-judgmental dialogue with your child to understand their experience fully.
Assess Physical and Mental Needs: Prioritize your child's safety and well-being, seeking professional support if needed.
Determine Action Steps: Take appropriate actions based on the situation, such as reporting content or adjusting parental controls.
Create an Ongoing Maintenance/Check-In Plan: Keep communication lines open with your child to prevent future incidents.
Questions to consider…
A new season of glass blowing competition Blown Away is on Netflix. Questions like these are a great place to start while watching this or any other competition show!
How do the contestants handle the pressure of time constraints and competition? When have you felt similar pressure?
How does the show highlight the importance of precision and attention to detail in glassblowing?
How do the artists adapt to unexpected challenges or mistakes during the glassblowing process?
