Squatty Potty + Advertising Literacy

Ads are a part of life.

When my daughter was about 4, we were listening to FM radio in a rental car. An ad came on the radio and my daughter said, “Skip to the next song!”

Until that moment, all of her music listening had been ad-free Spotify or Pandora. It was the beginning of our conversations about advertisements — how to identify them, what’s their purpose, and what makes an effective one.

One of our absolute favorite ads to talk about remains the Squatty Potty, even years later. It has all the elements kids love — ice cream, unicorns, and poop — and is a perfect canvas for talking about advertising literacy.

Here’s the post: How an ice-cream-pooping unicorn can teach your kids advertising literacy. As always, it's not just about consuming content together but about actively discussing and engaging with it. Be it ads, Netflix, TikTok, or Betweened.

YouTube & Kids

A frequent topic of discussion (and stress) with parents is how to navigate YouTube with kids. In this TikTok post, we share a few conversation starters, including talking about their interests, how to recognize safe content, what to do when they encounter something inappropriate (because it happens!), and deciding how to set limits and boundaries. It’s probably something we all could spend some time thinking about!

Thank you for being an integral part of our community. And have a great week!

Blue skies,
Carla
